Summer Chic

As a Scorpio, I thrive in colder days and embrace the elegance of chic layering. When summer hits, I feel exposed and vulnerable, which disrupts my sleep, often leaving me with only four hours of rest. This is just the beginning of a challenging season for me.

In an instant, my once-muted colours transformed into a bold rainbow of cake sprinkles. My neighbour confidently belted out the theme tune to the cartoon Rhubarb & Custard while I strutted toward the supermarket, my Vivienne Westwood bag making a statement.

Bright summer shades of orange and pink, paired with a touch of leopard print, can elevate any outfit. While I would usually wear these colours on a beach holiday, today I was walking to Portobello to pick up my cleanse juice. Please don’t ask what’s in it; it’s green and probably made of seaweed or spinach. I forgot my reading glasses, so I had to point at the pictures on the menu instead.

On Saturday, I tried a juice called "Stone Cold Killer" (as shown above). It didn’t contain blood; instead, the main ingredients were beetroot and celery. I am committed to reducing my coffee intake because I expect this change to improve my sleep. However, I haven’t noticed any improvement yet, which is frustrating. It’s only June, but I’m prepared for things to become more challenging from here.

I have decided to pass this season. As I unpacked my wardrobe, I discovered it overflowing with cherished quality pieces I'm excited to restyle. I embrace the comfort and familiarity of beach holidays, warm evenings along the river, and my collection of soft vintage tops and maxi dresses from vintage markets. These items hold the essence of the treasured summer days I've experienced, and I'm ready to showcase them.

The coolness of a kaftan reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor, who appreciated the freshness and ease that a summer breeze brings—feelings perfectly embodied by a kaftan. The hot pavements of London can be unforgiving, and the humidity is often overwhelming. Unfortunately, no drink compares to a cold pint of beer or a double scoop of ice cream. While I frequently buy salads to enjoy them, nothing beats a good bowl of pasta or a burger and chips.

Casual bags and baskets have confidently replaced my beloved Birkens. They are fun, practical, and lightweight, and I still manage to fit so much inside them. I donated the heels shown above later that same day—I refuse to go back to them. I've made the mistake of returning to heels twice before, and I regret it every time.

People keep asking if I’ve been away or commenting that I’m glowing. A tan makes everyone feel healthier. I enjoy the warmth on my body, but I dislike feeling sweaty and uncomfortable. Every summer, I inevitably find myself pondering whether I should crop my hair; who knows, maybe this is the year to do it.

Spending time in the garden or working outdoors is a wonderful way to enjoy the summer. I love watering plants, eating outside, and exploring the city on foot. Since I don’t have a car, using public transportation feels like a sauna experience that I can do without. I believe that in retirement, it’s essential to stay active and engaged; I don’t want to become lazy. I need to keep pushing myself while I still can.

I prioritise comfort and the freedom for my skin to breathe. After all, feeling good in what I wear is the ultimate statement of confidence. I have to move past it. I’m listening to my body instead of worrying about the societal expectations regarding what I should wear at 58. Flabby arms, varicose veins, that’s life in Summer.

As a Scorpio girl, I find my happiness in the embrace of darker colors. The anticipation of autumn fills me with excitement. I can't help but count down the days until the leaves start to fall, when blissful slumber and the aroma of hot coffee beckon during those refreshing morning walks. It's a season that truly captivates my soul.

Stay cool and fasten those seat belts Summer has only just begun !!!
