Supermodel chic again ?

Far from fading into the background many of the original Supermodels are showing up not only in advertising but….more importantly on the covers.

Why it matters ..still …

The most iconic faces of fashion during the 90s their faces graced every catwalk show, magazine layouts even pop videos slowly they slipped away from our fashion bibles. Families, studies their priorities changed. Like many, they were my fashion icons.

Fast forward to 2022/23 & British Vogue took the brave decision to feature two former Supermodels not tucked away near the back or a “where are they now” feature but boldly & brazenly smack bang on the cover.

Linda Evangelista featured in the yearly iconic September issue usually the highest-grossing of the year. At 58 the most chameleon of The Supers commanded a 12-page layout alongside an interview discussing recent health matters.

Pulling out the Christmas Cracker of all surprises the January cover saw the welcome return of Iman. Forthright, inspiring and promoting & discussing the influence of black models throughout the years.

Seeing Red at Louis Vuitton

Hallo S/S 2023 hitting the glossies of the return of Christie Turlington. Stylish, elegant images of the model now 54 will feature on billboards around the world.

The Vogue cover announces the arrival of female power in fashion. If like me you remember waiting for your next magazine cover, pouring over images on the catwalk and off-duty. I was obsessed and it pinpoints the start of my love of fashion. Below 2016

Fast forward to 2023 and against all odds in an industry obsessed with youth, the latest trends .. the next Kardashian etc we are confronted with recognisable faces of women our own age. Still looking good, surviving and more importantly sending out a reassuring message?

Age does not matter … who you are ..what you are …You are still here.

It’s important to recognise & begrudgingly accept that ageing happens to us all. But we shouldn’t step back or worse just fade away. The message from these beautiful women is a lesson to us all.

We look good

We feel good

We are in our 50s, comfortable in our skin ..WANTED by the press, tv, and social media. If we wish to work we still can. Pro-age role models 30 years after their first covers may be their most rewarding work is still to come.

Helena Christensen a former Supermodel and now a photographer has never left the public eye. I have been lucky enough to meet her twice both off-duty casual moments in London. This Spring she features Coco de Mer lingerie…watch her gym moments on Instagram & outdoor swimming…Super in every sense !!!!

Reigning supreme still at 54 the ad campaign was featured across all media platforms. Can a woman still promote, inspire and feature alongside newer younger faces?

YOU BET

Women over 50 struggling with menopause, and midlife ageing can still relate to these women ..we grew up with them. It’s so refreshing to recognise a face & name.

Will more magazines follow and give a voice and recognition to older women?

A good start to January 2023 let’s hope the theme of midlife women on covers, catwalks, advertising etc continues throughout the year … watch this space .
