Temperamental August.
Just when you think that light shorts and breezy tops will carry you through the season, the skies can darken and remind you that adaptability is key. Embracing a stylish yet practical approach to rainy days is essential, whether you’re reaching for chic trousers or durable boots.
Hurricanes, torrential rain, and weather warnings have thrown a fashion curveball into my wardrobe, courtesy of the unpredictable London weather. Did I think I would need to pull out the trousers this early? Lightweight Platzzo pants replace the shorts as a far safer option.
August was the hottest month of the year when I was growing up. School would close, and I would head off to Cornwall with a trusty surfboard under my arm. I raced through the waves, my body slathered in sun cream, while the unbearable heat made the car journey almost intolerable. Fast forward to 2025, and every day has become unpredictable.
I headed out to Chelsea for lunch, starting with a planned alfresco meal under a beautiful blue sky. However, by the time dessert arrived, the parasols had nearly blown down the King’s Road due to heavy rain. My open-toe sandals were soaked through with water.
Retailers understand that a summer sale is an excellent opportunity to clear out unwanted fall items such as sweaters, jackets, and boots that they couldn't sell. I’ve observed shoppers looking for out-of-season bargains, and in Brighton, I even saw children being zipped into hooded anoraks over their beachwear.
While waiting for my Uber, I realised that I wasn't wearing the summer dress, sling-backs, and pumps I had planned. I had been considering a chiffon skirt, but that morning, a hurricane amber alert was issued. Thankfully, these Zara trousers don't require ironing, and soon enough, the rain started pouring. I found myself jumping over puddles, with my jacket serving as a makeshift umbrella.
I'm tempted to pack away my shorts and pull out my fall trousers. I feel almost cheated. I had looked forward to styling dresses, skirts, and even swimwear, but now they sit unworn and neglected. Of course, I can layer them, but the truth is I'm disappointed. As I look at my collection of unworn sandals, I had hoped to wear them throughout September.
As I stroll through Portobello Market in my jeans this early August, I firmly believe that no wardrobe—regardless of age or body shape—should lack denim. This particular pair, without a doubt, belongs to my husband. However, they are soft, comfortable, and dare I say, a little edgy.
The perfect Jackie Kennedy-inspired summer look embodies timeless elegance and effortless charm. Start with white denim trousers, pair with a chic Gucci headscarf, tying it elegantly around your hair to keep those loose strands in check while adding a touch of sophistication.
This look not only pays homage to Jackie’s iconic style but also radiates grace for an end-of-summer outing.
Now, where is my brolly?
